League Round 4

So I got two games in this week. both against guard, rolled DOW, 3 objectives both times.

I went with
Rune Priest - Chooser of the Slain, Hurricane, Lightning
4 x Wolf Guard w/Power Fist and Bolt Gun
1 x 9 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Rhino
4 x 5 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Razor Back w/twin linked Lascannon
2 x Predator w/Auto Cannon, Heavy bolter, Storm Bolter

First Game I lost, But it was nullified due to my opponent misreading a rule.

Won my second game 2 objectives to 1.

What I learnt
Las Cannon Razor backs rock. Melta guns were a little unnecessary. This list struggles with High toughness, multiple would MC's and Heavy infantry.

So 250 Points to take this to 1500.

Working through this list
Preist was fine
The wolf guard did thier jobs
Melta guns on the grey hunters didn't do much because they tended to stay in thier transports. But I should keep them as tank shock protection
Preds worked well.
Razor backs were amazing
I could drop the upgrades on the preds, I end up with 218 Potential points to do something with.

Have to think about this.

4 Wolf Guard - 1 Assembled but needs touch ups, 2 need weapon changes and arms re-painted, 1 still on sprue.

34 Grey Hunters - 30 assembled in various states, approx 15 table ready but could use more work

Learning to Love the Gun Line

As most marine players know the strength of a Space Marine army lies in its marines. there are a couple of reasons for this
1. BS 4
2. 3+ Save
3. Ld 9
4. Str4, Ap5, Rapid Fire, bolt guns.

This means that marines can dish out highly accurate fire while surviving enemy fire. This has lead me to embrace attrition warfare.

Attrition Warfare is all about Inflicting more damage on your opponent than you receive. The aim is to cripple the enemy force in first 3 turns of the game so that when you advance on turns 4 and 5 the enemy will be overwhelmed.

In order to achieve this there are 3 things to consider
1. Volume of fire - this is about forcing saves. get enough shots in there air and eventually anything dies.

Units - Razor Backs, Predators, Marines, Grey Hunters

2. Range - making sure you can hit the other guy turn 1. If you can rapid fire something, it can assault you next turn. Keep them at a distance, troops in combat can't shoot and everything falls to pieces.

Units - Thunder Fire Cannon, Whirlwind and Stern Guard. Predators and razor backs are also a good source of cheap auto cannons and Las Cannons

Note on Scout Snipers: Yes they have range. however a little math hammer. 10 Shots, 5 Hits, 2.5 Wounds, 1 cover save passed. The lack the power and accuracy to be good in this role.

3. Power - You want to stop transports ASAP. Keep the enemy infantry from assaulting you. You MUST be able to pop Rhinos, Wave Serpents, Battle Wagons and Land Raiders. No easy task Las Cannons fill a niche here able to pop a land raider from the other side of the table.

Units - Razor Backs, Devestators, Stern Guard, Long Fangs, Predators

Now quick comparison between C:SM and C:SW

HQ - SW have rune priest with Living Lightning, SM have a Chapter Master with a 1 shot obital bombardment

Elites - SM have Stern Guard who have Kraken Rounds that fire 30 inches and have access to cheap heavy weapons. SW can pull wolf guard shenanigans and get 2 cyclone missile launchers for 270 points then assign 6 of the power armored members of the squad to Grey Hunter units.

Troops - SM have heavy weapons and combat squads, Grey hunters are cheaper

Fast attack - Too Similar

Heavy Support - Long fangs can engage multiple tagets and pack more weapons, Devestators have bullet catchers which makes them more survivable. SM also has access to the Thunder Fire which is great except in DoW missions.

Taking this in to account I've made some changes to my LGB list

Space Wolves 1500 Points
Rune Priest
5 x Wolf Guard - all with Power Fist, Bolt Gun
5 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Razor Back - Twin Linked Las Cannon
5 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Razor Back - Twin Linked Las Cannon
5 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Razor Back - Twin Linked Las Cannon
5 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Razor Back - Twin Linked Las Cannon
5 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Razor Back - Twin Linked Heavy Bolter, Storm Bolter
9 Grey Hunters - Melta gun
Rhino
Predator - Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter
Predator - Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter
Predator - Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter

Why Play [INSERT MARINE ARMY HERE]

This is something that has been on my mind for a while, I've been playing for a little over 18 months, I finished my first marine army and then on sold it to finance other projects. By why choose one type of marines over others? Heres a little insite to my thoughts

Vanilla Marines
This is the dex I learnt on, but with BA and SW releases why go back to it? Here are a few good reasons
1. Scouts in Landspeeders
2. Thunder Fire Cannon - I love it.
3. Bikers as troops
4. A but tonne of characters

List of the moment
Pedro Kantor

5 x Scouts w/ Power Fist
5 x Scouts w/ Power Fist
5 x Scouts w/ Power Fist

Land Speeder Storm

Land Speeder Storm

10 x Stern Guard w/Power Fist, 2 x Las Cannons
Razor Back w/Twin Linked Las Cannon

Razor Back w/Twin Linked Las Cannon

10 x Stern Guard w/Power Fist, 2 x Plasma Cannons
Razor Back w/Twin Linked Heavy Bolter

Thunder Fire Cannon

Predator w/Auto Cannon and Storm Bolter
2000 Points

Dark Angels
I'm going to let you guys fill this one in, It's something have no experience in

Black Templars
5 man terminator squads with 2 assault cannons each and tank hunters, 20 man troop units with prefered enemy. ouch.

Blood Angles
where to begin. Flying Dreadnoughts, Fleeting Dreadnoughts, armies with 9 dreadnoughts, 6 predators in a single army, Fast transport, Assault marines as troops (Although I'm not a fan), Sanguinary priests, death company. This is an awesome dex with many over the top options. Fights in 40K are short, there also seems to be a trend towards making them more brutal. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Crazy over the top armies. I may do a BA army one day. maybe Pre-Heresy Dusk Raiders.

Chaos
Khorne - Great assault troops, Kharne, it was my first pick for a chaos army, Currently have started paint on a daemon prince and assembled 16 berzerkers and started salvage on a Vindicator, rhino and predator.

Nurgle - Plague Marine and plasma gun spam, T6 Bikers, I like the army but think if your going nurgle the daemon army is better.

Tzeench - Awesome but expensive. Also the cover rules in 5th kind of takes the sting of the thousand son bolt guns.

Slaanesh - Lash prince ftw.

SPACE WOLVES
My current project. Tactical marines are one of my favorite units. Grey hunters are cheaper get an aditional attack and can get a special weapon in 5 man squads. Pure awesome.

I know a lot of players love different units from this dex but for me its Grey Hunters, supported by Razor Backs, Predators, a Whirl Wind, Wolf Guard, a Rune priest and maybe a dread or two.

Why take Space wolves over the others above?
- Grey hunters
- Wolf Guard including Battle leaders are cheaper and just as effective
- Most armor is the same or in the case of the dreadnought assault cannon , cheaper.

OTHER NOTES
In general I am not a fan of special characters. Yet I could rattle off a ton of them. In Chaos I am making an exception and taking Kharne the Betrayer because of the general themes I'm running.

Chaos is something I am only just starting to get into. So once again back to being a noob

BIV Result and moving on

First up I didn't do well. It was accentually my worse result ever. 6th last, 1 win, 1 draw, 3 losses.
I was going to take pictures but forgot my camera and since I was playing a joke army I enjoyed myself on Friday and Saturday nights a bit too much and was really in no condition to play either day.

So now its on to Space Wolves

Getting 1500 Points ready for Let Gosford Burn on May 30, here's the list

Rune Priest

8 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Power Fist
Rhino

6 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Power Fist
Razor Back, Twin Linked Las Cannon

6 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Power Fist
Razor Back, Twin Linked Las Cannon

6 Grey Hunters, Melta Gun, Power Fist
Razor Back, Twin Linked Las Cannon

Dreadnought, Assault Cannon, CCW, Heavy Flamer

Dreadnought, Assault Cannon, CCW, Heavy Flamer

Dreadnought, Multi Melta, CCW, Heavy Flamer

Predator, Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter

Predator, Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter

Predator, Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter

Lots of cost effective units. 10 Piece of armour at 1500 should cause some headaches for most people, along with CC, tank sniping and shot volume this should do well. Now just to paint it.

The other good part is that its easy to upgrade it to 1750 or 2000 points with a land raider and more grey hunters or downgrade to 1250 or 1000 points.

Next project is Khorne Space Marines, its shaping up as
Kharne
Daemon Prince w/Wings
24 Khorne Berserkers
16 Lesser daemons
2 Rhinos
1 Land Raider
3-6 Bikers
Vindicator
Predator
Greater Daemon

Battle in The Vines - A Tournament Prep Guide

This weekend is the annual BiV tournament in the Hunter Valley. Heres a quick checklist

1. The Army
101 Marines - Ready to go, make sure your list is something you can paint in time.

2. The Extras
Measuring Tape, Glue, Templates, Dice, Codex, Rule Book, at least 1 copy of your army list for each opponent, 1 for the organizer, 1 for you and a few spare, Objective markers, damage markers, smoke markers

3. Transport and Accommodation
DO THIS EARLY. Check the Venue work out how your going to get there with plenty of time and if you need to stay find somewhere early as cheap accommodation will fill quickly a lot of the time.

4. Stuff to Sell - Bring and Buy
I am using this as an opportunity to clean out my garage. I have almost $2000 worth of GW merchandise up for sale.

5. Water, Snacks, Beer.
If your getting a lift taking your own snacks will save you a lot of time and money. As I am doing this trip on the cheap myself and a few friends are also taking our own booze instead of buying it up there.

Drink plenty of water you will be doing a lot of talking.

New Plan

Last week I had an epiphany. I started by looking at the Raptors army I wanted to build. I realised something obvious. I could do the same army better with space wolves.

Then I bought the new BA Codex. Yes it has some nice stuff. Death Company Dreadnoughts, Sanguinary Priests, Baal Predators all caught my eye. But I still like my wolves better.

So with Battle in the Vines coming up this weekend having a bring and buy I decided it was time to clear everything I'm not using. I have a bunch of models set aside for different projects that I'm thinking of maybe doing sometime in the future. So I'm selling a heap. Probably 80% of my models. Why? So that I can Finish space wolves and then try a different project.

This brings me to Projects.

1. Space Wolves
2. Warhound Scout Titan - Scratch Built
3. Something Else. Something Different, Will wait till the wolves are finished first
