Noob Mistakes - Learn From my Fail

I have decided to take 2010 as a year of reflection to work out where I am in my hobby and in life in general. When preping for an appoc game it dawned on me that I had 12,000 points of marines. It dawned on me I could make at least 5 decent armies out of that

My current army who I have been using for the last 18 months is about the following
- Wins 6 or 7 out of every 10 games
- Gets 5 out of 10 for Presentation
- Gets 5 out of 10 for composition

Not a bad army just consistently average. Here are some basic mistakes I made when I started

1. Get the Guy at the shop to help you paint your first mini

This will save endless wasted time and paint. I liked the idea of Red Marines. Mechrite Red foundation makes this so much easier. Simple tips will drastic improvements to the speed and quality of your painting

2. Don't be afraid to proxy

I built a BA army and found I liked shooty armies. Borrow models, Proxy, avoid puting guns/upgrades on till your sure you like them. Proxy a small army play with the composition till YOU are comfortable.

3. Start Small

Something I am guilty of, something I want to break away from. Play at least a few games with what you have, work out what you are lacking, then buy. I have impulse bought alot of minis and even 2 complete armies. I ended up with 2 tables of models, none of which were complete.

4. Pick a Goal

Pick a tournament, league game, event, arbitrary figure, say 1750 Points of Space wolves for Lords of Terra. Plan it, Build it, paint it. Then decide on your next project. I usually have side projects for when I hit a wall, usually something different or creative like my Chaos army.

5. DO ONE THING AND DO IT WELL!!!!

This is the best advice I have ever received. Focus, focus, focus. 1 Plasma gun will not do you any good. 8 Plasma guns is very effective. 1 Thunder Fire in a mech force is a target, 1 Thunder Fire backed up by devastators, Tac Marines, long range Dreads or a whirl wind is a major head ache for your opponent.

Pick a focus
- Everything outflanks, infitrates or deepstrikes
- Cause as many wounds as possible
- As Many infantry as possible
- Leaf blower is a great example of this

WHERE AM I GOING
PROJECT 1 - SPACE WOLVES
Getting 1750 Ready for LoT - Will be my go to army for the forseable
Army list (Total Army)
- Wolf Guard Battle Leader
- Rune Priest
- 38 Grey Hunters
- 2 Dreadnoughts
- 10 Wolf Guard Terminators
- 7 Wolf Scouts
- 2 Vindicators
- 6 Long Fangs
- Land Raider Crusader
GOAL - COMPLETE ALL BY JULY 1

PROJECT 2 - BLOOD ANGELS
Something A little Different for me.
ARMY LIST
- Chaplain
- Lemartes
- 30 Assault Marines
- 10 Death Company
- 7 Bikers (need more)
- 2 Dreadnoughts
- More units to be added after the codex is out.

GOAL - COMPLETE ALL BY OCTOBER 1

PROJECT 3 - RAPTORS, C:SM
Raptors will replace my red skulls as my dedicated shooty army. Somewhat inspired by "Generation Kill"
ARMY LIST
- Captain
- 40 Tactical Marines
- 4 Razor Backs
- 3 Dreadnoughts
- 3 Predators
GOAL - Complete ALL by January 1, 2011

PROJECT 4 - CHAOS
This is more as a nice to paint army than competitive. No subtlety, trying for big and scary.
ARMY LIST
- Daemon Prince
- Kharne The Betrayer
- Khorne Berzerkers
- Rhinos
- Chaos Space Marines
- Defilers
- Greater Daemon

PROJECT 5 - BLACK TEMPLARS
I have some minis, I am hearing rumbling of a codex. This is probably going to be a horde army. If possible 6 x 20 man squads backed up by terminators, dreadnoughts and maybe devastators

PROJECT 6 - MENTOR LEGION - DARK ANGELS CODEX
If it ever gets re-released this will be my DA army. I have 2 Land Raiders and 30 Terminators set aside. I may also throw in Tactical Squads, Dreadnoughts and Devastators at the time.

Project Update - Good Bye Cadians

SELLING STUFF

Well its official, the 634th Cadian is getting disbanded. And by that I mean traded for a Pred, Dread, Land Raider, Drop Pod and crap ton of marines from a friend.

I will also be selling of a bunch of minis I bought and then never used like Logan Griman, Canis Wolfborn, Marneus Calgar at the Battle in the vines bring and buy. I am also putting my battle company up for sale at Battle in the Vines. More I'll sell it for the right amount than I want to get rid of it at any price.

SPACE WOLVES
Current LGB list has a Battle Leader, Rune Priest, 38 Grey Hunters, 3 Rhinos, 2 Dreads, 2 Vindicators. Its a little lacking in Range but with the missions (DoW w/ 10 Objectives 1 removed each player turn, Pitched battle w/modified kill points, Pitched Battle w/ 3 objectives on centre line of table and spear head w/ table quarters) don't think this will be too much of an issue.

BLOOD ANGELS
Still not sure where I will go with this list. Waiting for the codex, This may be my horde army.

SPACE MARINES
I will be doing a space marine army. Maybe Raptors. Pred, Razor Back, Dread and Tactial Marine heavy.

I already have Blue and Red Marines. I am also planning Black Templars and Mentor Legion. I would prefer to avoid these colours, A friend already runs Imperial Fists so they're out. Suggestions appreciated.

CHAOS SPACE MARINES
Assembly has started on my Berzerkers, Paint has started on my Daemon Prince. I'm also working on warping some terminators to show their fall to Khorn.

Let Gosford Burn - New List

Here is the latest list for the tournament on May 30 at Gosford Good Games.

Codex: Space Wolves, 1500 Points
Egil Iron Wolfs Great Company - Hunting Pack

HQ
Wolf Guard Battle Leader - Frost Axe, Storm Shield - 125 Points - Dirt cheap and effective in combat, We will be put in a rhino with y rune priest and 5 grey hunters to try and help my the priest survive shooting and assaults.

Rune Priest - Runic Weapon, Bolt Bistol, Chooser of the Slain, Living Lightning, Jaws of the World Wolf - 110 Points - Cheap and effective. Living lightning had an unlimited range which means it will probably be my default power, move the rhino 6, snipe out the top. JotWW is there for Fexes, orks, other large multi wound targets.

TROOPS

5 Grey Hunters - Power Fist, Melta Gun - 105 Points - Cheap and reliable.
Rhino - 35 Points

10 Grey Hunters - Power Fist, 2 x Melta Guns - 180 Points - Cheap unit set for rhino rushes.
Rhino - 35 Points

10 Grey Hunters - Power Fist, 2 x Melta Guns - 180 Points - Cheap unit set for rhino rushes.
Rhino - 35 Points

10 Grey Hunters - Power Fist, 2 x Plasma Guns - 185 Points - This is my holding unit. Sit still Hold off attackers with the plasma guns

ELITES
Dreadnought - Assault Cannon, Close Combat Weapon, Heavy Flamer - 115 Points - infantry support. Follow the rhinos and engage when needed. I chose assault cannons over multi meltas for shot volume.

Dreadnought - Assault Cannon, Close Combat Weapon, Heavy Flamer - 115 Points

HEAVY SUPPORT
Predator - Auto Cannon - 60 Points - I find I like to keep Preds moving. I dropped the side sponsons to keep this cheap. Its an annoyance unit, relatively hard to kill but should be able to take out a few targets of opportunity at range.

Predator - Twin Linked Las Cannon - 105 Points - Cheap Tank sniper unit. Its there to pick of armor at range.

Vindicator - 115 Points - Still the king of tanks. Great at everything and dirt cheap.

Thoughts on Lords of Terra

This July I will be attending the Lords of Terra tournament in North Sydney. It 1750 Points and is run with both an open tournament and an Invitational which I will be attending.

Since My current army is my first army and not the best painted I wanted to try something new to showcase my skills. As this is an invitational I don't feel the need to water down my lists like I would normally. I Don't feel the same need to take something that is Fun as well as competitive.

But what to take
Space Wolves: I could easily take Mech space wolves Wolf Guard Battle Leader, Run Priest, 55 Grey Hunters, 6 Rhinos, 3 Predators, Dreadnought.

I could Also field Wolf Wing. Logan Grimnar, Njall and 25 Wolf Guard Terminators.

Then I was think Blood Angels. I could probably run a very fast and vicious army ofChaplain, 30 Assault Marines, 10 Death Company, 3 Bike squads.

Or I could try to get my ultra marines up and running w/ Marneus Calgar, Librarian, 5 Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield Terminators, Land Raider, 2 Marine Squads in Rhinos, Drop Podding Stern Guard, A thunder Fire Cannon and a whirl wind.

And then there is guard. 2 Valkeries, 2 Leman Ruses, a Collosus, 3 Sentinels, fill with infantry.

So what would you take? 1750 points, Composition is not a factor.

BiV List Test game Result - List Submission

Finally tested my BiV list out last night.
Mission: Kill Points
Deployment: Spear Head
Opponent: Mostly Infantry Blood Angels
Result: DRAW

This was something I didn't expect. We both formed up and after some initiail skirmishes we ended up 24 inches away from each other in almost straight lines. niether willing to make the first move forward. I probably should have moved 5 inches forward in the hope of drawing him in but for some reason I though that would put me in assault range.

Everything did its job well, I lost both assault squads and 1 tactical squad. My oponent lost a land speeder, assault squad and bike squad.

Battle in the Vines Army List in detail

Here's the list I'm trying out tonight. I don't remember if this started as a dare, a bet or just some us talking about how different it would be on the way home for last years biv.

Red Skulls Second Company - 2000 Points

HQ
Captain - Relic Blade, Bolt Pistol - 130 Points
His job is to give me a little CC support. Not my first choice of HQ and I was tempted to give him nothing but then decided if I was going to run him at least run him well

TROOPS
2 x 10 Tactical Marines - Melta, Multi Melta - 175 Points Each
Land raider insurance.

4 x 10 Tactical Marines - Flamer, Missile Launcher - 170 Points Each
Basic do everthing work horse unit.

FAST ATTACK
2 x 10 Assault Marines - 190 Points Each
My shock troops. They are there to screen the Tactical Marines and counter assault, also to chase squishy targets and Krak grenade tanks.

HEAVY SUPPORT
2 x 10 Devestator Marines - 4 x Missile Launchers - 230 Points Each
I origonally had a mix of missiles, heavy bolters and multi meltas. However I feel that 54 bolt guns should provide enough anti infantry. The missiles are good for MC's and decent at popping tanks at range.

___
Re Cap
101 Bolt Pistols
101 Krak Grenades
54 Bolt Guns
12 Missile Launchers
4 Flamers
2 Melta Guns
2 Multi Meltas
1 Relic Blade

Let me know what you think.

I have a number of terminators set asside in case they ever re-release Dark angels.

634th Cadian Desert force
pending cash to buy tanks. Going for armor heavy. Valks, Sentinels, Ruses, Artillery, chimeras.
Army I want will cost me around $800 AU and have 18 pieces of armor at 2000 points.

- Blazing Skull Orks - Sneaky Pyromaniacs
- Tau infantry heavy force
- Daemon Hunters

ARMY LIST ANALYSIS
HQ
Librarian - One trick pony, Cheap, Drops, Flames, Tries to port, Dies. Looking for an alternative

TROOPS
Tactical Squad - Flamer, Missile - Missile was ineffective, flamer was ok
Rhino - did its job
Tactical Squad - Flamer, Missile - Missile was ineffective, flamer was ok
Rhino - did its job
Tactical Squad - Flamer, Missile - Missile was ineffective, flamer was ok

Will be switching to space wolves with a new model in mind

ELITES
Dreadnought - Multi Melta, CCW, Storm Bolter - Missed the flamer. Multi Melta was ok but not game breaking

Dreadnought - Plasma Cannon, CCW, Storm Bolter - Would have been better with a Twin-Linked Auto cannon. I didn't face any 3+ infantry all day, Plasma cannon mainly took out light tanks and walkers

Heavy Support
Whirl Wind - Moments of goodness, not greatness
Predator - Auto Cannon, Heavy Bolters, Storm Bolter - Was ok, Las cannons would have been better.
Thunder Fire Cannon - Awesome. Seemed to be able to consistently deliver 20+ wounds a turn, and in one turn managed to do 35 Wounds.

Although I will miss the thunder fire I am hoping that the increased effectiveness of basic infantry in my Space Wolves list will make up for it. I know I promised more detail and more photos but a lack of sleep and a need to concentrate on the game at hand made that difficult.

4 Weeks till Battle in the Vines in the town of Greta in the Hunter Valley Region of NSW. Army is painted, Magnetized and ready to go. 7 Weeks after that is the Good Games Gosford Tournament where I hope to debut my space wolves.

Space Wolf Codex VS Marine Codex

Last night I was asked an interesting question. "You already have a marine army, so why make a separate Space Wolf Army?"

Lets look at the basic building blocks I use for a marine list and compare those to the SW one

HQ's

Captain Vs Wolf Lord - Comparable. Very similar
Captain Vs Wolf Guard Battle Leader - 40 Points cheaper. But no invul. But I can give him a storm shield. 1 point to space wolves

Librarian Vs Rune Priest - I may cop flack for this but I like the librarian alot more

ELITES
Wolf Guard VS Terminators - Wolf guard are more flexible, cheaper and all round better
Wolf Guard VS Stern Guard - Stern guard by a mile. Their special issue ammo gives them an edge

TROOPS
Tactical Squad Vs Grey Hunters - GH are cheaper, have more attacks, can take wolf standards and have a second, free, special weapon. Tactical Squads have higher leadership, get a heavy weapon and can combat squad. For my style of play the combat squadding and heavy weapon don't add much. I rarely use either, Grey Hunters all over

The rest of the dex is either very similar or add ons that will only work if you have these basic building blocks in place.

So why take the Space Marine Codex?

1. Stern Guard - Flexible, reliable and deadly
2. Thunder Fire Cannon - I love this unit. Again flexible and deadly

And now I start to struggle. I'm really starting to think my days of using the marine dex are at an end. Let me know your thoughts.

10 Minute Noob Guide to Space Wolves

here are my quick picks out the dex.

HQ
Wolf Guard Battle leaders - under priced by about 15 points. Easy to use, good all round choice, best of the bunch

Wolf Priest - I can see potential

Rune Priest - I haven't seen as many of these around as I'd expect. I haven't tried one yet because of the amount of people who think they are over powered.

Logan Grimnar - I like the idea of wolf wing in games of about 2000 points plus but I think they lack the bodies they need to survive the wound generator list being played in my local area.

Elites
Dreadnoughts - Still giving good support and anti tank. The ability to move and shoot puts this on a par with the Predator.

Wolf Guard - This is a min or max choice. Either a handful for controlling troops or as I am in the LOT list to get a Land Raider as a transport or go for a multiple of 5 for the assault cannons, heavy flamers and cyclone missile launchers.

Wolf Scouts - I love the idea, I just haven't found a way to squeeze them in yet.

TROOPS
Grey Hunters - Pure awesome. 2 Special weapons (1 free), Wolf standards are great, and you can attach wolf guard. I have 50 in the works, will probably end up with 60 before I call this army finished.

Blood Claws - Its not that they're bad, it just that grey hunters are better and cost the same points.

Rhino - You will need to be able to transport 10 men. razors are better for C:SM, rhinos for C:SW

Drop Pod - Get your men in the thick of it. You have counter attack and a wolf standard so getting assaulted is not always a bad thing.

FAST ATTACK
I am not a fan of fast attack for marines, I either do it big (C:BA) or not at all.
Swift claws and Sky claws are ok, but I'm saving mine till I see the BA Dex.
I'm still not a fan of land speeders either.

HEAVY SUPPORT
Long Fangs - Love the shooting at 2 targets, the only draw back is the lack of bullet catchers.

Predator - Love them
Vindicator - Still under priced by about 40 points
Land raiders - Bullet Magnets. make a great distraction.

IF I WAS STARTING AGAIN FROM SCRATCH
this would be my shopping list
5 SW Terminators
5 x SW Boxes.
3 x Rhinos
1 x Land Raider
2 x Vindicators
2 x Dreadnoughts

This would give you 2000 points. and a good mix of anti Horde, Anti MC/Heavy Infantry and anti tank.

Done in a rush so I didn't rotate the pics

And now an Aroura Chapter Test Mini. Shoulder trim color vary's depending on what you read. Some say black, some say the same a ultra marines. I went with white. I think it works better.
I tried orange on the gun but it looked like it should have "Nerf" written on it. Grey seems to work.
